The presentation needs preparing, the difficult conversation needs having, or the application needs sending. Yet you suddenly clear your inbox, complete minor tasks, or find convincing reasons why now is not the right time.

From the outside, this can look like poor organization. But another pattern may be at work: the more important the next step becomes, the stronger the procrastination, self-doubt, and urge to withdraw. Self-sabotage does not always begin with a conscious decision against your own success. It often begins with a plausible excuse.

<iframe title="Spotify Embed: #098 Du willst Erfolg? It can be obvious, such as cancelling at short notice. Often, however, the pattern is subtler:

An important task is delayed until the last moment.

Other matters suddenly seem urgent just before an opportunity.

Nervousness becomes the conclusion: “Perhaps this is not right for me after all.”

Preparation is avoided, and the resulting stress is later used as evidence against the plan.

Withdrawal feels like relief in the short term, even though it blocks the long-term goal.

What matters is repetition. One bad day is not yet a pattern. But if the same chain keeps appearing before major presentations, career moves, relationships, or changes, it deserves a closer look.

How can you recognize self-sabotage?

Shortly before a keynote at the AI Transformation Summit, Frank Rechsteiner experienced exactly this chain. The invitation matched his subject, the event was a genuine opportunity—and yet he delayed preparing. As the appearance approached, the arguments for cancelling became more convincing.

“Preparation is the game changer.”

— Frank Rechsteiner (translated from German)

The problem was not a lack of knowledge. The delay itself created the stress that then made withdrawal appear reasonable. This reveals a typical cycle:

A meaningful step is approaching. The situation is new, visible, or personally important.

Discomfort and doubt increase. Thoughts about failure, judgment, or insufficient competence become louder.

Distraction provides short-term relief. Minor tasks replace the important one.

Time pressure grows. Late preparation creates additional stress.

Withdrawal suddenly seems logical. Cancelling, postponing, or downplaying the opportunity looks like a rational decision.

If you look only at the final step, the cancellation may appear to be clarity. If you examine the full chain, you can see how that outcome was produced.

Is procrastination always self-sabotage?

No. A task may be unclear, unimportant, or genuinely misprioritized. Sometimes cancelling is the right decision. The key question is therefore not, “Does this feel uncomfortable?” It is: Does the situation itself argue against this step—or am I merely trying to escape the uncomfortable feeling?

Discomfort is not reliable evidence that a decision is wrong. New tasks, or tasks you have not done for a long time, can feel unfamiliar even when the competence and opportunity are there.

“Everything new you do feels uncomfortable because we are not programmed to believe that new is good for us.”

— Frank Rechsteiner (translated from German)

The wording is deliberately pointed. The practical distinction is between feelings and facts: What exactly argues against the next step? What evidence supports that conclusion? And which objections appear whenever a situation becomes important?

How can you interrupt self-sabotage?

The pattern is unlikely to change simply by telling yourself to “try harder.” The first lever is to make the process visible early.

1. Name the trigger

Write down the specific situation. What is about to happen? Why does the step matter? What might change as a result? The more precisely the trigger is described, the harder it becomes to hide it behind general excuses.

2. Record your inner language

Write down the sentences that appear: “I do not have time.” “This is pointless.” “I am not ready.” “Perhaps I do not really want it.” The aim is not to fight every thought. First, identify the recurring language.

3. Make the distraction visible

What do you do instead of the relevant task? Emails, administrative details, and supposedly urgent requests may look productive while functioning as avoidance. Record the substitute behavior as well as the thought.

4. Separate the feeling from the decision

Do not make a fundamental decision only at the moment of maximum tension. Define a small, verifiable next step instead: build the first three slides, schedule the conversation, or send the draft. Then reassess the situation based on what actually happened.

5. Review the outcome

What actually occurred? Which fear materialized, and which did not? What helped? This review creates a counterweight to the automatic story that anything new must be avoided.

“If you recognize your patterns, you are ten steps ahead of anyone who says: No, I don’t need that; I have always managed.”

— Frank Rechsteiner (translated from German)

If the pattern is highly distressing or keeps returning despite your own efforts, support from a coach or therapist may be useful. The important point is not to dismiss the issue with a label, but to examine the actual sequence.

What does self-sabotage mean for leaders?

For leaders, the pattern rarely remains private. Someone who delays decisions out of fear of judgment, downplays change, or relies exclusively on familiar success strategies affects an entire team.

This matters particularly in a world of work where AI is changing tasks, roles, and career paths. Experience remains valuable. But it can become an obstacle when it is used only to defend new demands with yesterday’s rules.

Self-leadership does not begin with complete certainty. It begins when doubt is noticed without automatically being allowed to make the decision.

A final podcast—and a new next step

Episode #098 marks the end of “Neue Spielregeln” in its current podcast format. The topic itself leads naturally into the next format: anyone who wants not only to understand change but to work on their own situation can join Frank’s masterclass.

“And this is not an ending.
