A Fresh Start in Life: Maybe It’s Never Too Late

“It’s too late now.”

For a new job, to become self-employed, or to start a new career. Or simply to reshape your life in a different way.

At some point, this statement can come to feel like a fact surprisingly quickly. Yet a fresh start in life is often less a matter of age than a matter of what we’re willing to let go of.

In the new episode of New Rules of the Game—Leadership, Work, AI: What Really Matters Now is exactly what this episode is about.

Why We Hold Onto the Past for So Long

People often stay in situations that no longer suit them because they’ve already invested so much: time, energy, money, education, relationships, or many years in the same job. The thinking behind this is often: “I can’t just start questioning everything now.” But this is precisely where the trap lies. Just because we’ve been heading in a certain direction for twenty years doesn’t mean we automatically have to continue down that same path for another ten. We can’t bring back the past. But it doesn’t have to determine what our future looks like either.

A fresh start doesn’t have to be radical

Change doesn’t necessarily mean throwing everything away overnight. Sometimes it starts on a much smaller scale—with a conversation, a job application, a new idea, continuing education, or a decision you’ve been putting off for a long time. Often, it’s simply a matter of taking the initiative again, rather than just letting life happen to you. Because even if you don’t make any changes, you’re still making a choice—just that many things will stay the same.

Is age really the limit?

Perhaps we overestimate how much our age determines what is still possible. Curiosity, physical activity, and a willingness to try something new again might be more decisive factors. A fresh start in life doesn’t have to mean devaluing everything that came before. On the contrary: experiences, detours, and even wrong decisions can be exactly what makes the next step possible in the first place. We can’t change the past. But we can prevent the next ten years from looking exactly like the last twenty.

In the new episode of New Rules of the Game , we talk about excuses, comfort zones, small risks—and the question of what really stands in the way of starting over.
