The AI transformation in a company doesn’t start with a new tool. It starts with an uncomfortable question: Do our structures even still fit into a work environment where artificial intelligence can take on more and more tasks?
Many companies are investing in AI, automating processes, and hoping to boost productivity. Yet the organizational foundation often remains unchanged. Departments continue to operate in their usual silos, decisions make their way through multiple levels of the hierarchy, and processes follow rules that were developed under completely different conditions. AI may make these processes faster. But that doesn’t automatically make them better.
In Episode #097 of New Rules of the Game – Leadership, Work, AI , Frank Rechsteiner discusses why the introduction of AI does not yet constitute a true transformation. After all, those who merely digitize existing work processes are, in the worst case, automating the past rather than shaping the future of their company.
AI Transformation in Business: Automation Alone Is Not Enough
A successful AI transformation within a company requires more than just selecting the right technologies. Executives must ask themselves which tasks should continue to be performed by humans in the future, how decisions are made, and where responsibility should be appropriately assigned.
Not every department, approval process, and leadership position needs to remain in its current form.
That doesn’t mean doing away with structures across the board or replacing people with technology. It means consistently approaching organization from the perspective of its purpose: What work actually creates value? Where does AI meaningfully support people? And what rules have so far prevented teams from realizing their full potential?
Why Companies Need to Rethink Their Organizational Structure
This is exactly where automation becomes real change.
Those who simply integrate AI into an unchanged organizational chart are squandering a large part of its potential. Those who, on the other hand, are willing to redesign processes, collaboration, and leadership create the conditions for a more adaptable organization.
The central question of this podcast episode is therefore:
If you were to start your company from scratch today using AI, which departments, hierarchies, and leadership positions would you actually create again?
In the new episode of New Rules of the Game , the focus is on outdated management structures, the limits of mere automation, and the courage to reorganize work.
